Welcome to The Wall by Puttin’ On The Foil.
This site will allow you, the user, the opportunity to have your voice heard by several others in the Oilers blog community. The content is provided by you. This is the sister site of www.puttingonthefoil.com, which is an Oilers blog containing posts from Racki, Steve-O and Trogdor, and comments from users such as yourself. So, in short… this site is for your content… the other site is for our content. Of course, we expect people to post comments on both sites, as well as participate in polls and things on the main site.
All registered users have the necessary privileges by default to make a post, however you will need to have your content approved by Racki, Steve-O or Trogdor before it will show on The Wall.
So to begin, here’s how you make a post…
- Make sure you are registered on The Wall. Even if you already registered on Puttin’ On The Foil, you need to register here as well.
- Log in with your account. You will be given access as a contributor automatically.
- Go to your Dashboard page.
- Under the Posts menu on the left, click Add New (you may have to expand the Posts menu first).
- Type up your post!
Some tips:
- There is a “show kitchen sink” icon that you may want to click to give you a bit more control over your post.
- For whatever reason, there doesn’t seem to be an option to allow you to upload pictures, etc. as a contributor. So in order to do it on your own, you’ll need to link to the picture elsewhere. You can do this under the HTML tab on the Add New Post / Edit Post screen. This is also where you can add links.
- The Wall supports Wordpress shortcodes. This allows addition of interesting content (such as Youtube videos) and some cool formatting. For a list of shortcodes, please see the Wordpress guide.
- I’ve added some shortcodes that create special notes for teams. These are great when you’re displaying info such as a team’s lineup. To use them, just enter the full team name without spaces (and no city name) in these brackets “[ ]“. Ex. [ oilers ], [ bluejackets ], etc. In addition, you can do the same for the Springfield Falcons as [ falcons ], and a generic NHL tag is available as [ NHL ]. You need to close the tag with the appropriate closing tag. Ex. [ / oilers ]. Again, don’t forget to remove all spaces.
- The Wordpress guide above also tells you the various HTML tags that are supported.
- Do not bother picking a category, as that will automatically default to “user content”.
- Please DO add tags to your post. These tags make it so that people can search up your post easier. I generally keep them as one word per tag, but will have multiple tags. So for example, if my post is based on Mike Comrie, I might put something like: “comrie, oilers” for the tags.
- By default, your post will need to be approved by a moderator before it will show up here. This allows me to prevent spammers from cluttering the site, and ensure that content has a consistent “feel” to it.
- Please DO use the built in spell checker (check mark icon under the visual tab on the Add New Post / Post New screen) before publishing your post. I don’t have much time to do this for you, but it makes life easier for everyone reading your content!
- Try to avoid profanity, if you can, but it is allowed here, as long as it isn’t the basis of your post.
- Do not post any adult content, illegal content or anything that may offend anyone (that includes but is not limited to sexist, racist or other discriminatory comments, personal attacks on other users, and personal attacks on players – criticism is ok, but keep it about hockey).
That’s it! Get going, and write your blogs. If they’re good enough, we may even feature them on Puttin’ On The Foil.
